Recent studies suggest that increased acidity, or low pH, in the brain is linked to panic disorders, anxiety, and depression.
But University of Iowa neuroscientist John Wemmie, M.D., Ph.D., says his work suggests that changes in acidity are important for normal brain activity as well.
“We are interested in the idea that pH might be changing in the functional brain because we’ve been hot on the trail of receptors that are activated by low pH,” says Wemmie, an associate professor of psychiatry…

Natural remedies for anxiety. Valerian or Passion flower?

I have a long history of anxiety problems, and during the last few months it has gotten very bad again. Problem is, I cannot take benzodiazepines, due to the fact that I am an addict. I went that route several years ago, and it was bad news, as you can imagine. I also have no interest in ingesting sodium fluoride by taking anti-depressants. I’ve also been down that road. So I started reading a little bit, and the two commonly available herbs that seem to be my best bets are Valerian or Passion flower. I’m wondering, does anyone have experience with either of the two, or any knowledge about them? If so, which do you recommend, and how much? (For a 170 pound, generally extremely drug tolerant adult male)

Thanks.

Valerian root can be useful for many people, but some people do not like it. I have taken both passion flower and valerian root and, while I like them both, I prefer valerian root. Many people use yoga and exercise for anxiety relief, but not everyone has the physical capability to do these as intensely as needed. Valerian root’s smell is offensive to some, so one might take it fast to avoid smelling it too much. I would not call valerian root addictive, but I do have a valerian root habit. Sometimes taking a break from it is needed, but (overall) valerian root seems to work much better with my body than most other herbs. Like medications, a medical doctor should be consulted if a person has concerns about how one might react to a supplement.

Any adults with ADHD have success with natural remedies?

I’m looking for adults with ADD/ADHD that have had good results with natural supplements or methods?Just some background so I don’t get a lot of useless feedback. I tried a some liquid vitamins but I didn’t notice much of a difference. I’m trying Attend right now for a couple months but I haven’t given it a fair shake because I forget to take it regularly which is a REAL problem for me. I also rarely consume fast food or sugary sodas, my diet is pretty well balanced.

I have found so far that regular exercise helps with my mood/tiredness/anxiety/restlessness/focus, but that alone I don’t think is enough, especially at work. My mind is like this constant swimming noise or cloud of thoughts. Has anyone tried any biofeedback specialists also?

Thanks for any help you can give me, I sure need it.
Thanks, krzynurse13 I am doing the exercise thing and it does help, my situation sounds so much like yours that’s just how my brain works also, people say eliminate distractions but don’t realize that my mind is the distraction, and every thought can become an obsession I am trying to put away to get back on task.

What Treatment Should I Follow After Having Heart Palpitations?

I’m 18 years old, and took diet pills (Zantrex-3) yesterday. More than 8 hours later, they finally hit me. I felt nauseous, had headache, threw up several times, had tremors, and then even began having panic attacks. I went to the emergency room , and this all still continued even after sitting in the ER for two hours waiting to be seen by the doctor. He gave me a sedative to slow my heart. In about 20 minutes (2:45AM), it finally kicked in. Waking up this morning, I feel drained and my head is throbbing, with my heart still kind of racing. Is there anything I can take to lessen my heart rate, or can I call the ER and request a prescription (or will I have to be readmitted to get one)? What foods should I avoid while waiting for the pills to finish passing through my system?
My pulse is 110.

It makes the new hair stronger. It is working for me. It’s not coming out in clumps anymore. I’ve just been divorced and in the same month my son was hit by a 4-wheeler and broke his femur and arm. 2 surgeries so far and ex is asshole. Things are better now. My son is going to be okay and truely I just gave everything to God and he is pouring his blessings upon me =)

If you are about to give a speach that your career depends upon, go to your doctor and explain the situation. Most likely s/he will prescribe Xanax or Ativan, possibly a beta blocker. You will want to try the med before your speach to see how it affects you. Don’t do alcohol, lol, that can backfire big time.

If the speach does not have significant influence over the rest of your life, work on the speach. Practice in front of others. Possibly try a little Benadryl to counter some of the andrenalyn. Try it before to see how it works for you.

Fear of public speaking is very common. Practice and experience usually get you beyond it.

The latest findings contradict stereotypes presented in previous studies that describe female terrorists as socially isolated and vulnerable to recruitment because they are uneducated, unemployed and from a foreign land, psychologists reported in a study published online in the APA journal Law and Human Behavior…

Anxiety attack?

Can you have an anxiety attack, when you don’t feel stressed, and actually feel elated? In my previous question some people mentioned that I could be experiencing an anxiety attack, since I just had a baby (4 months ago) and the stress that comes with that. I was walking with my daughter, I felt really good, healthy, happy, and really in the zone. I had stress all week, this was my relaxation time. So my question, can you experience an anxiety attack when you are really in a good mood? Any experiences??? If you have had one please describe in full detail. Thanks so much!

Anxiety Attack is a normal physiological reaction to stress. It helps one deal with tense situations such as yours (just had a baby). In general, it helps one cope. However, when anxiety becomes excessive, irrational dread of everyday situations, it will become a disabling disorder.

So if your not stress its unlikely for you to have anxiety attack..

Have you heard of of the following…

Post partum blues (baby blues) is a common occurrence. Mild and rapid mood swings including episodes of sadness, irritability, anxiety, insomnia, tearfulness and crying spells characterize post partum blues. Baby blues usually occurs right after delivery and for no longer than about two weeks. The symptoms generally do not cripple a new mother’s day to day activities.

Post partum blues are conservatively managed. Having someone else care for the baby at night to allow for adequate sleep, ensuring adequate family support, and giving encouragement and reassurance are often successful ways to manage post partum blues.

Watch out:
If post partum blues is not managed it can lead to:

Post-partum depression presents itself much like regular clinical depression. The only difference is that post-partum depression seems to be brought on by the trigger of childbirth. Symptoms may not start right after delivery, but will last much longer than two weeks. The symptoms will also be much more severe and may render the mother incapable of having good quality of life as a new mother.

It could be that you were thirsty after running down 4 flights of stairs! However you should get an EKG to make sure your heart is ok.

Unfortunately heart attacks and anxiety attacks are very similar. Go see your doc!

has anyone taken anti anxiety medication while pregnant?

I have been having terrible panic attacks after 2 miscarriages this year (without medication). I recently had brown spotting and am waiting to hear from my ob to see if I am miscarrying again. I would like to know from someone who may have real information on taking benzos while pregnant

I have been having anxiety attacks for years, and recently went to my OBGYN for my annual. I told her that I was thinking about getting pregnant, and I wanted to be able to take something for anxiety that I could take while pregnant. She prescribed Zoloft. Apparently this is not just used for depression, but for anxiety as well. Ask your doctor about it.

Anxiety Medication While pregnant?

I’ve always had problems with panic attacks. However, they were never too problematic. They would only last about 5 minutes & usually if I could call someone and make them distract me, especially my husband, then I would be okay. Since he’s been deployed, I’ve been having panic attacks more frequently, and its very hard to stop. Not even talking to someone will stop it. Breathing won’t fix it, and all I can do is hyperventilate, and curl up in a ball, and hope it stops. I can’t leave the room I’m in. I’m 16 weeks pregnant and wondering if this is a common problem, if my doctor will be able to prescribe me anything. I’ve never been on prescription medicine before, but only because I was able to deal with it, I’m not so sure about my ability to cope anymore. I go on thursday & plan on talking to her then. But just wondering what to expect.
Thanks!

I’m not sure about that… When your pregnant it is very hard to find medicines you are able to take, my doctor only let me take tylenol… For EVERYTHING, and of course it didn’t help lol

I also used to suffer from panic attacks, and occasionally still do, some things that helped me >>>

Listening to music (country my favorite) and singing.
Taking a warm bath and closing my eyes while breathing deep and slow.
(this probably will sound weird) but i used to turn on the shower and lie in the bottom of the bath and let the water trickle over me. It’s very therapeutic
Get a coloring book =) it sounds childish but coloring relieves stress, plus you’ll get in some practice before your little one gets here =)
Go for a walk, get some fresh air.
Try jogging, working out also makes you feel good.

Praying always helped me.

I hope you find something to make it better!

Some people swear by controlled breathing, in through the nose, out through the mouth. I never had much luck without medication and i have tried several times over the 16 years i have been on meds for panic attacks. I have taken some classes to try to control the attacks and they say to expose yourself to the symptoms when you are not having an attack so that when you do, it won’t be a big deal. For example, if you symptoms of panic attacks are shortness of breath, they recommend getting into a sauna and learning to be comfortable with that feeling of more labored breathing..etc

How can I stop the panic attacks that come every time I go to the gynocologist?

I can’t go to the gynocologist. Every time I try to I go into a horrible panic attack. I know she’s not going to hurt me, I know it needs to be done for health reasons…I just can’t do it. I start crying and freaking out and I can’t breathe and I just feel like I’m about to die. It’s horrible. I’m 21, almost 22, so I’m long past due for all sorts of tests. I’m still a virgin, so at least I’m STD free(thank you hatred of my body, you keep my disease free)..and the gyno knows that I was molested as a child and she’s said that she won’t do anything until I’m okay with it…but I don’t think I’ll ever be okay with it. And when it comes to the topic of sex, I either think feel like I should just sleep with someone I’ll never see again to get it over with or that I’ll never do it. I’m going to be a virgin forever because I’m so fucked up. I need help. But I can’t afford a psychiatrist. So yeah, how can I stop the panic attacks without medication…because my mom thinks they’re nonexistent.

admin answers:

Many cities have mental health clinics with sliding pay scales. Go to one of them. They have professionals from social workers to psychiatrists.

You need therapy from a professional to get through this.

Your mom needs to read about panic attacks. They are very real. In order to help you, she needs to be supportive. Otherwise, perhaps you should get your own place to get out of that non-supportive environment.

Don’t worry about staying a virgin. In today’s world, it is safer to remain one with all of the STDs out there. I know for sure there are other virgins out there. My brother and some friends of mine are some of them. They are older than you. There is nothing to be ashamed of. You should be proud.

Dealing with the panic attacks is your first priority.

“Most often now you have to call them change management seminars, instead of stress management, … You have to euphemize [the term] because companies are afraid that by bringing in a stress specialist, the employees will think the company is aware of a problem.” – Tim O’Brien

“Meditation is coming into the workplace as stress management. Stress acts directly on productivity. Stressed workers don’t function very well. They don’t turn up to work on Monday mornings.” – Eric Harrison

“The clinics fit consumer’s lifestyles, bringing the service to the shopper. Consumers are responding to it well. … The whole topic of women’s health and personal wellness is so focused on stress relief and stress management. What the in-store clinics do is shed one more level of stress.” – Candace Corlett

“We do a lot in partnership with the W-2 program, teaching classes that help meet the requirements for some of the W-2 clients. Other classes include time management, stress management, financial education, and anger management.” – Lana Anderson

“It improves your heart muscle, it lowers your risk of having a heart attack or stroke, and it improves your circulation. It also helps with your stress management.” – Mary Lyon

LOVE QUOTES –

“Love is the expression of one’s values, the greatest reward you can earn for the moral qualities you have achieved in your character and person, the emotional price paid by one man for the joy he receives from the virtues of another.” – Ayn Rand

“Do not think that love in order to be genuine has to be extraordinary. What we need is to love without getting tired. Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.” – Mother Teresa

“I do not trust people who don’t love themselves and yet tell me, ‘I love you.’ There is an African saying which is: Be careful when a naked person offers you a shirt.” – Maya Angelou

“The true beauty of a woman is her inherent ability to make better a man in every way.” – Don Williams Jr

“Remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall — think of it, ALWAYS.” – Mahatma Gandhi

“Love is something far more than desire for sexual intercourse; it is the principal means of escape from the loneliness which afflicts most men and women throughout the greater part of their lives.” – Bertrand Russell

QUOTES ON TOUGH TIMES –

“The way to bliss lies not on beds of down, And he that had no cross deserves no crown” – Francis Quarles

“And I’m always surprised at who’s there when you fail, … It’s usually not the people you expect to be there. It’s easy to have friends when you’re winning. And Jerry Maguire was kind of about that. This was about that, but it’s like success and failure get trumped by an even bigger issue, which is, ‘Are you going to be truly alive, and do you even know what that is?’ ” – Cameron Crowe

“We’ve had the ability to go through some tough times. Through those tough times we’ve learned. You look at the North Dakota State game and those are tough times. … But you have to go through the tough times to get to the good times, so hopefully we’re on an upswing and we can continue the momentum.” – Brian Butch

“We had a tough day today. We played a better basketball team. Physically we had a tough time getting around them, a tough time getting to the hoop. We tried. We were courageous. We played hard. Florida was just better today.” – John Pelphrey

“Tough times breed tough men and we are taking a tough team to Dublin to play tough rugby. We are going to look squarely in the face of adversity and show a different side to our characters this weekend.” – Scott Johnson

“For a coach, this is always a tough time as we realize we are not going to have these guys around much longer. It is also tough for the parents as well. It is just a special time.” – Matt Murray

“Claxton’s a community that works well together. They pull together, especially in tough times. They celebrate, if there’s something to celebrate, the community comes together to celebrate. If we go through a tough time, the community comes together and supports each other.” – Adam Kennedy

“There may be some tough times here in America. But this country has gone through tough times before, and we’re going to do it again.” – George W. Bush
